Percentage to CGPA
Convert your CGPA to a percentage for a job application, a college form or a scholarship. Enter your CGPA, pick the formula your board or university uses, and the converter shows the percentage, the working and a full CGPA-to-percentage table. It also works the other way round, from percentage to CGPA.
How to convert CGPA to percentage
- Enter your CGPA on the 10-point scale, for example 8.2.
- Choose your formula. If you are not sure, start with CGPA × 9.5, the CBSE method that many universities also follow.
- Read the percentage, and check the table for other CGPA values.
Check your university’s rule first. There is no single national formula. Most universities print the conversion formula on the back of the mark sheet or in an official circular, and that is what employers and colleges will accept.
CGPA to percentage formulas in India
| Formula | Example: 8.0 CGPA | Commonly used by |
|---|---|---|
| CGPA × 9.5 | 76% | CBSE (Class 10 under the old grading system) and many state and central universities |
| CGPA × 10 | 80% | Anna University and several private universities |
| (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 72.5% | AICTE-approved engineering colleges, VTU, GGSIPU, DTU |
| (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 | 75% | GTU and some other universities |
| 7.1 × CGPA + 11 | 67.8% | Mumbai University (10-point engineering scale) |
These formulas change from time to time. VTU, for example, uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 for its recent schemes, while KTU switched to CGPA × 10 for the 2019 scheme. If your university is not listed or uses a different multiplier, choose Custom multiplier.
Why does CBSE use 9.5?
When CBSE used grades for Class 10, it looked at the average marks of students who scored the top grade (A1) in each main subject over several years. That average came to about 95 out of 100, so each grade point was treated as 9.5 marks. So a CGPA of 9.0 converts to 85.5%. CBSE now issues marks for Class 10 and 12, so the 9.5 rule is mainly used for older mark sheets.
Percentage to CGPA
Just reverse the formula. With the 9.5 rule, CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5, so 76% is 8.0 CGPA. With the AICTE rule, CGPA = percentage ÷ 10 + 0.75, so 72.5% is 8.0 CGPA.
