What do I need on the rest of the class?

Find out your grade in a class from your assignment, quiz and exam scores. Enter each grade with its weight from the syllabus and the calculator shows your current grade, the letter it matches and what you still need to reach the grade you want. It works with percentages, letter grades or points, and updates as you type.

Grade calculator showing a weighted grade of 84% and the score needed on the rest of the class
Three weighted grades give 84% so far. The calculator shows you need 87.33% on the remaining 30% to finish with 85%.

How to use the grade calculator

  1. Pick the grade type: Percent (85%), Letter (B+) or Points (18 out of 20).
  2. Add a row for each assignment or category, such as Homework, Quizzes, Midterm and Project, with its grade and its weight. The weights are usually listed in your syllabus.
  3. Read your grade in the green box. If your weights add up to less than 100%, it is your grade so far.
  4. Type the grade you want in the box below to see what you need to average on the rest of the class.

Your rows are saved in this browser, so you can come back after the next test and just add the new score.

How weighted grades are calculated

Each grade is multiplied by its weight, the results are added up, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights:

Weighted grade = (grade₁ × weight₁ + grade₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ (weight₁ + weight₂ + …)

Example

Homework 92% (weight 20%), quizzes 85% (20%), midterm 78% (30%). So far that is (92 × 20 + 85 × 20 + 78 × 30) ÷ 70 = 84.0%, a B. The final exam is the missing 30% of the grade.

Dividing by the weights you have entered, rather than by 100, is what makes this your grade so far. Dividing by 100 too early would make it look like you are failing.

What do I need on the rest of the class?

If 70% of the grade is done and you have 84%, the remaining 30% decides the rest. To finish with 90% you need (90 × 100 − 84 × 70) ÷ 30 = 104%, which is not possible without extra credit. To finish with 85% you need 87.3% on the remaining work. The calculator does this for you in the box under the result. For a single final exam, the final grade calculator also shows a table for every letter grade.

Points-based grades

Some teachers grade by total points instead of weights: 18/20 on a quiz, 45/50 on a lab, 88/100 on a test. Your grade is simply all the points you earned divided by all the points possible. Choose Points and enter both numbers for each assignment. In the example that is (18 + 45 + 88) ÷ (20 + 50 + 100) = 88.8%.

Letter grade and GPA scale

Letter gradePercentageGPA points
A+97–1004.0 (4.3 on some scales)
A93–964.0
A-90–923.7
B+87–893.3
B83–863.0
B-80–822.7
C+77–792.3
C73–762.0
C-70–721.7
D+67–691.3
D63–661.0
D-60–620.7
FBelow 600.0

This is the most common US scale. Your school may draw the lines a little differently, for example A from 90% instead of 93%, so check your syllabus or student handbook if a grade sits right on a boundary.

In letter mode the calculator turns each letter into grade points (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3 and so on), averages them by weight, and shows the letter that average matches.

Frequently asked questions

My weights don’t add up to 100%. Is that a problem?

No. The calculator divides by the total of the weights you entered, so you can use it partway through a term. If the total is over 100% it shows a warning, because that usually means a weight was typed twice.

What if my teacher uses categories?

Enter one row per category, such as Homework 25% or Tests 40%, with your average in that category as the grade. If you only know the individual scores, average them first or use points mode for that category.

How do I include extra credit?

Enter a grade above 100%, for example 105, or add the extra points to the points you earned in points mode.

How do I drop my lowest grade?

Remove that row with the × button. The grade updates straight away.

What letter grade is an 89.5?

On the scale above it is a B+, because A- starts at 90. Many teachers round 89.5 up to 90, so ask yours.
